Grooming: Facial hair

A man’s face is seen the most so it should look good.

Facial hair

A gentleman never relaxes his standard of grooming. This is not to say one cannot have facial hair, or long facial hair. It is to say a gentleman keeps his facial hairs even and properly weeded.

A Man's Guide to Beards

If a gentleman wants facial hair, what style is right for him? I thought this guide was pretty spot on, when it comes to the generals. And, at the end he points out some tools any man would need if he wants to grow out his facial hair.

Shaving

When removing long facial hair, use a trimmer first. If one do not trim up, he will just pull his hair out. That’s not only not a good look, it’s also painful. A gentleman takes his time when shaving or sculpting.

It is better to shave after a shower than before as the steam opens pours and makes for a cleaner shave. After shaving rinse with cold water to close those pours. This will ensure that the skin looks better and it will help prevent infection. And, don’t forget to moisturize when finished.

Some recommend a pre-oil before shaving. This opens the pours more fully – better than steam. This is not mandatory. However, if one is having issues when shaving, hot steam just isn’t enough, I recommend this. A shaving brush is also a good tool for applying the shaving cream, rather than just slapping it on with the hand. Many men get along fine without these, but both will work wonders if shaving is a cumbersome chore.

When shaving, do not press into the skin. If a gentleman finds himself doing this to get a clean shave, he needs a new blade. Also, do not go over an area of skin more than once. If one this seems needed, the blade is too dull or he is shaving in the wrong direction.

Final thought:

Don’t be afraid to try new things with your facial hair when looking for what works for you. And when you find what works, don’t be afraid to keep looking.
